NO book, movie video game, or TV series would be complete without at least one Fictional Illness!!!
Claiming that a character, or even multiple characters have contracted an illness with a real-life medical designation often can be scary enough.
However; the names of some concocted illnesses have true potential to give you a real-life case of the willies.
Courtesy of the hardworking folks at ZIMBIO, check out this listing of FICTIONAL HOLLYWOOD ILLNESSES - RANKED From UTTERLY TERRIFYING To REALLY NO BIG DEAL:
1. OPHIOCORDYCEPS UNILATERALIS ( photo above):
Appears in:The Last of Us
Symptoms: 1-2 days after infection, this aggressive fungus invades the brain and strips victims of their "higher thought," or humanity. Shortly afterward, it takes over the host's head and visual cortex, which leaves said host with only a primitive form of echolocation. Over the course of months, the fungus uses the host's body to project limb-like stalks. Once the host has decayed to the point of death, the fungus spreads by releasing pores from the body.
Prognosis: About as bad as it gets. There is no known cure, so once you're infected, you're pretty much a plant creature. What makes this disease particularly freaky is that the science is sound — for the most part. In nature, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis really does invade its host and use its body as a shell. Fortunately, it hasn't figured out how to invade humans. Yet.
2. FORCED EVOLUTIONARY VIRUS
Symptoms: After a devastating nuclear war with China, American scientists made a desperate attempt to save their people. They created Forced Evolutionary Virus, which altered human biology so inhabitants could survive in the toxic environment. Sadly, the virus had unexpected complications. It manipulated the bodies of its hosts, and turned them into hideous, deformed ghouls. It reworked human DNA to the point that they were more "creature" than "human."
Prognosis: You don't come back from this.
3. RAGE VIRUS
Appears in:28 Days Later
Symptoms: This terrifying virus makes its victims super, super mad. It reverts them to a primal state and directs them to attack all people who aren't infected, thereby spreading the virus. When victims are first infected, they shudder, shake, seize, and essentially purge their own organs. It's not pretty.
Prognosis: While most people succumb to RV, a few are just carriers. Unfortunately, the virus has no known cure.
Appears in:Ender's Game (1985)
Symptoms: Descolada is Portuguese for "un-gluer." As its name indicates, the virus rips apart DNA like nobody's business. When the DNA attempts to reassemble itself, it makes an even bigger mess. Ultimately, infected people end up losing and growing random body parts, shedding skin, and getting ripped apart.
Prognosis: A nasty death.
5. T-VIRUS (TYRANT VIRUS)
Appears in:Resident Evil
Symptoms: In the virus's first stage (before the late '70s) it rapidly killed people. In its second stage, it kept them alive but stripped their higher brain functions and mutated them into predators with sharp teeth, nails, and other deformities.
Prognosis: Pretty bleak. Umbrella Pharmaceuticals originally created the virus to spread like the dickens and have a 100 percent mortality rate. A second batch rendered hosts super-humanly strong and immune from mortal wounds. There is no cure, but a small percentage of people are immune
Appears in:The Walking Dead
Symptoms: TS-19, named after the first documented infected person "Test Subject 19," kills the brain and resuscitates only the brain stem. In other words, it leaves humans with only the basic of instincts — breathing, swallowing, etc — and turns them into monstrous, cannibalistic animals.
Prognosis: There is no known cure.
7. MAD ZOMBIE DISEASE
Symptoms: Patient zero ate a "mad cow burger," which led to "mad zombie disease," and it's exactly as it sounds. Infected people get a furious fever that swells their brain and turns them into raging lunatics hungry for human flesh.
Prognosis: No cure for this one, unfortunately.
8. The FEVER (NECROTIZING FASCIITIS)
Appears in: Cabin Fever
Symptoms: Bloody infections lead to a wide-scale breakdown of the body's tissues. Skin rapidly deteriorates as hosts become increasingly desperate, confused, and aggressive.
Prognosis: Not even Dr. Oz could correct this.
9. BASCILLUS VAMPIRUS
Appears in:I Am Legend (1954)
Symptoms: Essentially vampirism. Infected people crave blood, can't stand light, and develop oversized canine teeth.
Prognosis: Not the best. The bacteria can infect both living and dead hosts, which makes it very difficult to avoid infection. There is no cure, but a pill can be taken to help victims with sun sensitivity
10. The ANDROMEDA STRAIN
Appears in:The Andromeda Strain
Symptoms: This alien virus overtakes the circulatory system and creates a variety of blood-related problems. It's been compared to ebola, though this strain is far scarier.
Prognosis: If you happen to have acidic blood, you'll be safe. This one only operates within a specific pH range
