LEON TRIPP - TANYA TRIPP
RICHMOND COUNTY, GA District Attorney NATALIE PAINE filed notice Thursday of her intention to seek the death penalty if LEON TRIPP is convicted of murder in the death of his stepdaughter, LATANIA JANELL CARWELL!!!.
Remains found last week buried in a shallow grave were identified Monday as Carwell through dental records. She was last seen at her Tate Road home April 16. Her 16th birthday was the next day.
AUGUSTA CHRONICLE reports LEON TRIPP 39, was arrested along with his wife, TANYA TRIPP, at a U-Haul facility in the Atlanta area in May. Tanya Tripp reported her husband and daughter missing April 17, hours after he allegedly woke her and said he was taking the teen with him to go help a friend with car trouble. Though Tripp insisted she had not been in contact with her husband or daughter, phone records revealed numerous calls between her and Leon Tripp between the date of the teen’s disappearance and May 24.
Charges against Leon Tripp were upgraded to murder after he indicated to sheriff’s investigators this summer that Carwell was dead.
LEON TRIPP is now charged with MURDER, CRUELTY To CHILDREN, and; CONCEALING A DEATH.
TANYA TRIPP is now charged with MURDER, CAUSING A DEATH By FAOLINGTo PROTECT, and; CONCEALING ADEATH.
A cause of death has not yet been determined.
NATALIE PAINE filed the notice of the intention to seek a death sentence based on two statutory grounds:
1.Tthe murder was committed while Tripp was engaged in kidnapping with bodily injury.
2. The murder was “outrageously or wanton vile, horrible, or inhuman in that it involved torture, depravity of mind or an aggravated battery on the victim.”
She also filed a request to Chief Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. to appoint the next judge available for a death penalty assignment.
The Tripps have been held in jail since their return from the Atlanta area in May.
They married while Tripp was in prison. He served about six years for aggravated assault, aggravated stalking and theft. He moved into the Tate Road rental home with his wife and two stepdaughters in 2015.
