KWANZAA is a 7-day non-religious holiday celebation created and founded in 1966 by Dr. MAULANA KARENGA a holiday specifically designated for the BLACK COMMUNITY.
KWANZAA is an East African Swahili term for the phrase, "first fruits of the harvest," or, shortened to, "first fruits."
The 7-day commemoration acknowledges and promotes the uplift of all of the various aspects of COMMUNITY, CULTURE, HERITAGE, and; SPIRITUALITY.
HABARI GANI is an East African Swahili greeting meaning, "What's the news?", or, in a more formal manner, "How are you?"
The seven days of Kwanzaa annually begin December 26 and culminate January 1.
Each of the seven days is represented by a distinct symbol of AFRICAN CULTURE. The seven days are collectively named the NGUZO SABA.
The seven days are represented by the following terminology:
UMOJA: UNITY
KUJICHAGULIA: SELF-DETERMINATION
UJIMA: COLLECTIVE WORK And RESPONSIBILITY
UJAMAA: COOPERATIVE ECONOMICS
NIA: PURPOSE
KUUMBA: CREATIVITY
IMANI: FAITH
Though KWANZAA is NOT a religious holiday, it does promote SPIRITUALITY, and as such; is open for celebration by persons of ALL spiritual backgrounds.
