Filmmaker AVA DUVERNAY tackles the 1962 MADELINE L' EGLE novel, A WRINKLE IN TIME, and, tackles the film by having STROM REID and OPRAH WINFREY as two of its stars!!!
AVA DUVERNAY, OPRAH WINFREY, STORM REID, and, A WRINKLE In TIME, are the cover story for the February 2018 BLACK HISTORY MONTH Issue of ESSENCE Magazine.
Here are some interview interludes:
OPRAH on A WRINKLE In TIME vs The WIZARD Of OZ:
“I just watched The Wizard of Oz again last year with one of my godchildren who was seeing it for the first time, and the magic of that is exactly what Wrinkle is going to be for another generation."
STORM on working with AVA and OPRAH:
“This is a huge milestone in my career, to be in a movie with Ava DuVernay directing and Miss Oprah being in it. When I think about it, I don’t really know how to feel. There are so many emotions. But it’s just a great blessing that will forever change my life.”
AVA on the magnitude of being a trailblazer;
“When I’m introduced as the first this, first that...," DuVernay began about the magnitude of the project. "It doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s not anything I earned. I don’t allow myself to take it in like it’s real. I’m trying to have all of us up in there and more. I don’t want to be someplace by myself. I don’t want to be on a pedestal as the first this and that. That’s so wack; that is the old way of thinking.”
NEW COVER ALERT 🚨 @Ava, @Oprah, and @StormReid are bringing #BlackGirlMagic to life in #WrinkleInTime! “I so want Black women to love it and Black girls to love it. I want everybody to love it, but this is a love letter to us,” DuVernay says. Our February issue is available on newsstands 1/19! #IssaEssenceSlay 💫 Hit the 🔗in bio for more on our cover stars.
As a black artist, I belong to a mighty tribe. We celebrate our greatness as a people and we amplify our humanity. Even when the world tells us that neither exists. That’s what black artists have done since the beginning. I’m proud to be a part of that legacy, alongside so many others who do the work of lifting us up and keeping us there. Thanks to everyone who voted and to #NAACP for the nomination. Onward for all of us!
