Despite an attempted veto by NEBRASKA Governor PETE RICKETTS, on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, the very conservative CORNHUSKER STATE legislature abolished the DEATH PENALTY!!!
In March 2015, former Death Penalty supporter DELAWARE Governor JACK MARKELL gave his endorsement to a similar bill in the State Senate of THE FIRST STATE.
PENNSYLVANIA has the fifth largest DEATH ROW in the UNITED STATES. In February 2015, Governor TOM WOLF declared an open-ended moratorium on executions.
CALIFORNIA has the largest Death Row in the entire USA. The GOLDEN STATE is also at a standstill while a federal appeals court weighs the question of whether long delays and infrequent executions render the penalty unconstitutional.
Since 1976, TEXAS had led the entire USA in executions (when the U.S. Supreme Court approved the practice after a brief moratorium).
The wheels seem to also be coming off of the bandwagon in the LONE STAR STATE. From a peak of 40 executions in 2000, Texas put 10 prisoners to death last year and seven so far in 2015. According to the state’s Department of Corrections, the number of new death sentences imposed by Texas courts this year is precisely zero.
