Decatur woman, 75, killed; grandson charged with murder
Meet MARQUIS La' VONTA FREEMAN!!!

DECATUR POLICE announced on Wednesday, October 30, that MARQUIS La' VONTA FREEMAN, 23, was arrested Tuesday night in the death of his grandmother, SHIRLEY KENDRICK, 75, and injury to his grandfather and another relative.

AJC reports Decatur fire officials went to Kendrick’s home on Cambridge Avenue shortly before midnight Tuesday in response to a call for medical assistance.

Police said they were called when the fire crew suspected an assault had occurred on the grandmother.

Kendrick had been stabbed and had a head injury, Decatur Sgt. Jennifer S. Ross said.

The grandmother was taken to an area hospital where she died later, police said.

Family members attempted to intervene in the attack on Kendrick, police said.

The victim’s son suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Kendrick’s husband also had minor injuries.

Freeman was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and battery, Ross said.

Next-door neighbor John Post said he and his wife, Ali, were standing out on their porch and about to head for bed when they heard a woman scream, a man scream, glass break and a really loud thud at the victim’s home.

A few seconds later, Post said one of the residents of the home called his name and asked for his help.

JOHN POST said;
“I rushed inside. Everybody was covered in blood. When I had the guy pinned down, he kept repeating — kill me now. Show me the light. Please snap my neck now.” Post said, “He kept saying it over and over.”

Post said his wife was trying to help the woman, checking her pulse and talking with paramedics by phone.

SHELL RAMIREZ said;
“She was willing to help anyone. She was the nicest person you could meet.”

Ramirez was at the Kendrick home Wednesday with food for distressed family that was gathered.

Kendrick was recognized in 2002 as a Decatur Hometown Hero for her volunteer work in the community.
