SUNDAY MORNING JAZZ: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARLENA SHAW!!!

PEACE And GREETINGS;

GOOD MORNING!!!

Vocalist MARLENA SHAW was born  this day in 1942, and today is celebrating her 71st Birthday.

Born Marlina Burgess in NEW ROCHELLE, NY, Grand Diva MARLENA SHAW she inherited her love of music and jazz in particular from her uncle.

Her uncle, JIMMY BURGESS, introduced her to the recordings of DIZZY GILLESPIS and MILES DAVIS.

When she was ten she performed at Harlem's Apollo Theater, and despite the enthusiastic reception she received in front of one of the world's toughest audiences, her mother refused to let her go on the road with her uncle, a trumpet player.

Shaw began attending the State Teachers' College in Potsdam, N.Y. but later dropped out. For a time in 1963 she worked around New England with a trio led by Howard McGhee. By the mid-1960's she was performing regularly for audiences in the Catskills, Playboy clubs and other New York area clubs

Her career took off in 1966 when she landed a gig with the Playboy Club chain in Chicago. It was through this gig that she met with representatives of the Chess Records music label, and soon signed with them. She released her first two albums on their subsidiary Cadet Records. She moved to Blue Note Records in 1972. She also recorded one of the disco era's biggest hits - a remake of "Touch Me in the Morning" on Columbia Records.

MARLENA SHAW still performs and records today. In 2001 and 2007 Shaw was one of the performers at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.
