PEACE And GREETINGS;
Singer/Actress/Dancer/Bandleader/Recording Artist/Political Activist LENA HORNE was born this day in 1917, and today would celebrate her 96th Birthday.
Born LENA MARY CALHOUN HORNE in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of BROOKLYN, NY; her parents separated by the time she was three years old, and she lived for several years with her paternal grandparents.
Her mother was a successful stage performer and took young LENA on the road with her. Together they lived in various parts of the South before returning to Horne's grandparents' home in Brooklyn in 1931.
LENA HORNE had early ambitions to be a performer--against the wishes of her family, who believed that she should aspire to greater heights. Nevertheless, in 1933 she began her first professional engagement, at the COTTON CLUB, in HARLEM, NY.
She sang in the chorus, and though only sixteen years old, held her own among the older and more experienced cast members.
Later moving to HOLLYWOOD, she gained small parts in numerous movies, until she landed much larger roles in films, CABIN IN THE SKY, and, STORMY WEATHER.
Due to the RED SCARE of the 1950's that was largely influenced by late U.S. Sen. JOSEPH McCARTHY, artists like legendary late PAUL ROBESON and herself were BLACKLISTED, and found themselves unable to find work in HOLLYWOOD.
LENA HORNE was on of many celebrities who joined with Rev. Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. for the 1963 MARCH On WAsHINGTON in August 1963.
She also continued to work as a performer, both in nightclubs and on television, while releasing well-received record albums.
She announced her retirement in March 1980, BUTT; in 1981 at the age of 63, she returned to the stage with her own one-woman show, LENA HORNE: The LADY And her MUSIC, which ran for more than three hundred performances on BROADWAY, and earned her numerous awards.
She continued recording and performing sporadically into the 1990s, and retired into private life around 2000.
LENA HORNE passed away in NEW YORK CITY due to complications from Heart Failure on May 9, 2010; at the age of 92.
HAPPY LENA HORNE SUNDAY MORNING JAZZ In The AFTERNOON!!!
